Foil, Soft-Touch, and Spot UV: A Guide to Folding Carton Finishes
Two folding cartons can cost pennies apart and feel worlds apart. The difference is finish. Here’s what each option does and when it earns its place on your carton.
Foil stamping
A metallic foil — gold, silver, copper, or holographic — pressed onto the board. It catches light and instantly signals premium. Best used sparingly on a logo or product name; foil everywhere reads gaudy, foil on one mark reads luxury.
Soft-touch lamination
A matte film that feels velvety under the fingertips. It’s the finish beauty and premium brands reach for because it changes how the box feels, not just how it looks. Pairs beautifully with a spot-UV or foil highlight for contrast.
Spot UV
A glossy, raised coating applied to specific areas over a matte base. It adds dimension and draws the eye — a spot-UV logo over a soft-touch matte box is a classic, high-impact combination.
Emboss / deboss
Pressing the board to raise (emboss) or recess (deboss) a logo or pattern. Tactile, subtle, and elegant — especially effective on uncoated and kraft stocks where it reads as understated craft.
