Food-Safe Carton Packaging: What Restaurants Need to Know
Takeout packaging has a hard job: hold hot, greasy, or wet food, survive a delivery, and still show up looking like your brand. Here’s what to know before you order custom food cartons.
Board and coatings
Food cartons use food-grade board with functional coatings. A grease barrier stops oil from soaking through and staining the exterior; a moisture coating handles condensation and steam. Spec these around your actual menu — a dry pastry box has different needs than a saucy entrée carton.
Food-safe inks
Printing on food packaging uses food-safe inks and keeps print on the exterior surface. This is non-negotiable and standard on a proper custom food carton — but worth confirming, especially if you’re comparing quotes.
Choosing a format
- Auto-bottom takeout carton — pops open and locks in one motion; ideal for fast counter service.
- Tuck-top bakery box — for pastries, cakes, and cookies.
- Printed sleeve — wraps a burger, bar, or burrito; cheap and high-branding.
- Clamshell carton — grab-and-go with a hinged lid.
| Hot & greasy | Grease-barrier auto-bottom carton |
|---|---|
| Baked goods | Tuck-top box, sized to the item |
| Grab-and-go | Sleeve or clamshell |
Match board coating to the food (grease vs. moisture), keep inks food-safe, and size each carton to the menu item so food travels well and presents on arrival.
